K2 Component

In order for K2 to inherit the styling from the template, and have the same appearance as the demo, you will need to go to Admin → Components → K2. Select Parameters from the button menu in the upper right of the administrator, and set Enable K2 base CSS to No then save.

K2 is a content construction component (similar to CCK for those acquainted with Drupal), which lets you create custom content types (items) for your Joomla! website. With K2, you can transform your Joomla! website to a news site with author blogs, product catalogs, work portfolio, knowledge base, download/document manager, directory listing, event listing and more, all this bundled under one component. Again, Affinity has styled support for this component to visually integrate the powerful component from JoomlaWorks.gr.

Note: K2 will not be available as part of the RocketLauncher.

Advanced Features

K2 is well beyond the capacity of the ordinary Joomla content component, allowing for multiple category levels, in contrast to the single section / category levels of Joomla; ACL control, allowing the creation of special permissions orientating on content control; Layout options, much more extensive options on controlling the exact layout. There are some of the key features of K2 and the ones which we will outline in some detail below. However, do note, the main avenue of help should be the JoomlaWorks site, as they are K2's developers.

Multiple Level Categories

A simple concept, but one vacant from the core Joomla content component. To understand the new feature, it is best to understand the limitations of the Joomla core. In Joomla, you can setup Sections, were you can have multiple child categories and in each category, you have your articles. In this setup, Sections are the top level grouping with sub-levels which are the categories, so this equates to two levels. Therefore, it should be apparent that there is severe limitations when it comes to deeper levels. You cannot, for example, have a Sports section with a category called Olympics then another subset, named Swimming and even another child group such as 200m Relays. With very large sites that have a main focus on content, this is a fatal weakness.

Luckily, K2 solves this concern by extending Joomla content beyond its current limits with effectively, unlimited level categories. The scenario outlined above pertaining to Sports sections / categories would be possible with K2, and incredibly easy to implement. This is a frequently requested feature in Joomla and K2 offers this functionality.

Setup

K2

Creation of the multiple level categories is extremely easy, and any one familiar with the basics of Joomla will be home in the K2 dashboard. To access the Categories manager of K2, you need to login into the Joomla Administrator and go to Component → K2 → Categories. You will now be in the K2 Category Manager. From here, select the New button in the upper right of the screen to create a new category, simply setup the item to match your preferences. There are many more options than core Joomla here but only concern yourself with the basics for the purposes of multiple-level setup.

The primary focus is the Parent selectbox. From here, you can select which other category you wish for the one you are creating / editing to be a child / sub of. You can repeat this for all child items. Therefore, to echo the example above, you would create a Sports category as a top level item and Olympics you would set the parent as Sports and so on.

ACL Control

K2

Joomla has several ACL types, these are essentially Public, Registered and Special. Special is sub-divided into the following roles, author, publisher, editor, manager, administrator and super administrator. However, the controls are quite limiting when it comes to advanced control over user activity. Although K2 is not an ACL solution, such as JACL, it does have advanced functions to allow you to control the competencies of K2, i.e. its content. With K2, you can create User Groups, where you can set which number of users have control over certain content items. For example, you may have 3 users who you wish to only create/edit in the Sports category on your site, out of 100 categories. K2 allows for this.

Go to Admin → Components → K2 → User Groups. From there, select New and setup your own group. You can set the controls that are typically assigned to the author, publisher, editor roles in Joomla but more diverse and interchangeable. For total ACL control, you will want to browse http://extensions.joomla.org

Configuration

K2 is a powerful component and has a plethora of options to configure the vast areas of the component. There are effectively 3 areas were you would want to control the specifics of the content, these are the Menu parameters, the Category parameters and singular Item parameters. In each area, there are many options to configure everything from author/creation date/modified date to the number of articles to appear per section, and how many per column and more layout controls pertaining to each row. Almost everything you would want to control from the comfort of the Joomla administrator are available to you.

Community Builder is an iconic community platform for Joomla. It serves primarily as a profile extended to Joomla, allowing more substantive controls and options for user profiles. The extension is developed by JoomlaPolis.com. In Affinity, there is styling to adapt the Community Builder layout to the design of the template, such as the modified tabbed design, adaptations to the input areas.

Community Builder is a free 3rd party component for Joomla so you can download it without the need for purchase. However, JoomlaPolis do charge for their documentation so if you feel you need need their documentation, you will need to purchase a subscription with them.

However, in any instance, the template will still provide basic styling for the component.

Note: Community Builder will not be available as part of the RocketLauncher.

JomSocial Advantages

JomSocial has the convenience of using the standard Joomla user table so nearly any login module you choose will work. You can also link to the standard Joomla "forgot password" and "forgot username" pages. This improves compatibility greatly when using extensions like RokBridge with phpBB3. If you are using both systems in tandem, please consider editing phpBB3 registraton links as this will ensure that your user's login info stays synced (only available to phpBB3 club members). The current JomSocial phpBB3 plugin is designed around RokBridge due to it's non-invasive code structure and ease of installation.

If a user registers through Joomla's registration, this user will be registered with JomSocial and have access to all the user applications. This is also true for any user added by the Administrator of the site. JomSocial does have a customized registration that allows for custom profile fields to be added and then set as optional or mandatory. Registration links can easily be redirected to make sure all new users take advantage of the customized registration process. There is also an included "Hello Me" module with a login form and links as well as displayed user information and avatar once logged in.

An additional option is "Facebook Connect" which is part of the core download of JomSocial. If you are planning on using this feature, please read: Facebook Connect Documentation. Please also note that you should not sync a "Super Administrator" user with a Facebook account. This can cause you to lose login abilities.
Facebook Connect in JomSocial allows users who already have a Facebook account to seamlessly connect their Facebook account and information with your site with a single sign on process which does not require the user to remember multiple account information.

Affinity has support for many popular community extensions from 3rd parties. The styling support is as extensive as each application allows. You can see a list, with a short description below for each extension item.

Note: All the extensions below and their peripheries will not be included in the RocketLauncher package. You will need to download and install separately.

3rd Party Extensions List

  • JomSocial Support
JomSocial is a community / social networking component from Azrul. The extension is commercial and is available for Joomla 1.5.7+ only. The Affinity template has inbuilt support for the component, using the override feature of Joomla 1.5 to restyle the default variations to seamlessly integrated into the July template release. JomSocial is the perfect compliment to a community geared template. Note, JomSocial is not included in the RocketLauncher due to its commercial status.

  • Community Builder
Community Builder is an iconic community platform for Joomla. It serves primarily as a profile extended to Joomla, allowing more substantive controls and options for user profiles. The template has individual styling for the Community Builder profile pages for seamless integration and similarly, the component is not included in the RocketLauncher but you can easily download from JoomlaPolis.com.

  • K2
K2 is a content construction component (similar to CCK for those acquainted with Drupal), which lets you create custom content types (items) for your Joomla! website. With K2, you can transform your Joomla! website to a news site with author blogs, product catalogs, work portfolio, knowledge base, download/document manager, directory listing, event listing and more, all this bundled under one component. Again, Affinity has styled support for this component to visually integrate the powerful component from JoomlaWorks.gr.

  • phpBB3
phpBB3 is a powerful forum, and is the platform of choice for Joomla.org as well as our very own RocketTheme forum. The Affinity phpBB3 style is a product of the RocketTheme phpBB3 styles club and you will need to be a member in order to access the theme. Note: Joomla Template Club members do NOT have access to this theme.

However, as a community template, the joint launch of bother Joomla and phpBB3 counterparts is important, hence the synchronicity. Although, there are important Joomla elements that should be noted. Firstly, the Joomla and phpBB3 sites are synced via RokBridge, a free bridging component for the two platforms, and a series of modules to extract data from phpBB3 into Joomla are present, such as Latest Posts.

Description

The descriptions for RokTwittie echo the name of the parameter and are self explanatory. However, elaboration of a few key parameters is useful in understanding.

The Twitter Login and Twitter Password options do not need to be filled in order for the module to work. However, Twitter has a maximum of 100 hits in their API so if you have high traffic activity related to the module, you may wish to fill this out. However, entering the username field beneath login and password will allow it to work.

You can load multiple usernames for tweets and searches by separating them by a comma in the various fields.

The options provide you with incredible control over what to display, and are subdivided into sections such as username tweets and search tweets. The frontpage has some of these options disabled but to the left, you should see the module when fully activated.

IE6 PNG Fix

What is the PNGfix?

If you have ever opened a webpage with a transparent PNG in Internet Explorer 6, you will see an obvious problem. The images do not appear transparent but adopt a light blue background, which is unsightly to say the least. This is the purpose of the PNGfix, to allow transparent PNG images to work correctly in the web browser Internet Explorer 6. A common way around this is to use a range of different Joomla! extensions which can be applied to your site. However, this is already built in to new RocketTheme templates (the fix already provides other solutions to various other IE6 issues). The author of this new PNGfix is Drew Diller.

Learn More

All templates, starting from January 2009 have the fix outlined on this page.

How do I use the PNGfix?

To apply the PNGfix to a particular image, all you need to do is add a class, png. We have an example of image HTML code below:-

<img src="image.png" alt="Image" />

Now add class="png" to the code such as:-
<img src="image.png" alt="Image" class="png" />

Uninstall all other PNGfixes before using the template version, that includes plugins you may have installed into Joomla as they will conflict with the template fix

How to remove the PNGfix

If you wish to remove the PNGfix from the template, you have to remove the file and remove the reference from the rt_head_includes.php file. The file is called DD_belatedPNG.js and is located in the /templates/rt_affinity_j15/js directory. You would then remove the following from the rt_head_includes.php file:-
<script src="<?php echo $this->baseurl; ?>/templates/<?php echo $this->template?>/js/DD_belatedPNG.js"></script>
<script>
    DD_belatedPNG.fix('.png');
</script>

Demo Content

The demo for Affinity utilises a large stock of custom code and styling to make the most of every content item and show what Affinity can do. This basically means that the HTML used in the custom modules and content have customisations which employ the characteristics of the template to make the "perfect" content.

This demo content section will take you through some of the content areas and general techniques used to further your understanding and help you realise the true potential of Affinity. If you would like to quickly deploy a replica of our Affinity demo for a new Joomla site, be sure to check out our RocketLauncher package.

Using Typography

If you are using RokCandy, you do not need to disable your content editor or enter HTML mode, simply use the RokCandy typography syntax.

A guide to implementing the included typography styles and elements into your site as well as instructions for inserting typography using the HTML editor option of your WYSIWYG editor.

Video Tutorial Currently Available! Launch the Joomla Using Typography Video Tutorial now!

Every RocketTheme template has its own set of content styles, these styles are known as Typography. Typography can come in a number of varying and diverse formats, ranging from simple text modifications to image insertions to improve the look, layout of your website and give it life. This tutorial will take you through the necessary steps to adding typography to your Joomla! content.

Inserting Typography with the HTML Editor

To insert the Typography into your content, you must use the HTML feature of all Joomla! content editors. The following tutorial will outline the steps in which to do this with the default Joomla! content editor, TinyMCE. Please be aware, even though there are other content editors available, all are basically the same and the steps would be just as effective if you are using another Content editor.

Please note that the following tutorial will show you how to insert HTML (typography) into Article, the same procedure is apparent for Content Items and Custom modules. You may skip steps 4 and 5 if you are using No WYSIWYG editor or if you are using RokCandy.

Step 1 - Login

Login to the Joomla! Administration Control Panel. Go to www.yoursite.com/administrator. Enter the Administrator's Username and password.

Step 2 - Navigation

Navigate to the Article Manager. Hover over the Content link on the top taskbar, scroll down to Article Manager.
[clear]

Step 3 - Article Manager

When you have selected the Article Manager link, you will be sent to the Article Manager control panel. Select either Edit (after selecting a particular content item) or New, depending on whether you want to add typography to an existing or new item.

Step 4 - HTML Icon

To add typography to your content, you must enter the HTML mode of your Content editor. In the TinyMCE editor, this is an icon called "HTML", in some other content editors, it is a tab. Press the icon to enter HTML mode. This step is not necessary if you are using No WYSIWYG editor.
[clear]

Step 5 - HTML Mode

A popup shall appear with your content in HTML format, only if you are using TinyMCE, with other editors, a new tab may become selected. You shall do all your editing here for typography.

Step 6 - Inserting HTML

You then proceed to add your HTML coding into the tab/textbox that appears in front of you. This can be any HTML such as span class typography or styled lists.
[clear] You will not see the effects in the content editor, all style affects are only visible on the Frontend of your Joomla! website.

Logo Editing

The following is a step by step guide to customising your Affinity logo image by replacing the logo text with your own organisation or company's name and logo.

In order to utilise the Fireworks Source PNG included with the affinity template release, you will need Adobe Fireworks. The 30-day free trial of this software as well as more information is available here at the Adobe website.
image

Logo Editing Video Tutorial

Learn how to customise your Affinity logo using Adobe Fireworks with this detailed video tutorial.
[clear]

One of the first steps of customising your new Affinity template will undoubtedly be altering the logo text to reflect the name of your company / organisation. RocketTheme makes this process a simple one by including both the Source PNG for the template, as well as the font(s) used.

The most effective way to customise the logo is to use the included Source PNG file. When opened in Adobe Fireworks, this file contains all of the Layers in the design allowing you to tweak and change any of the image elements of the template design. The following steps will help you quickly get your new logo ready to go:

Step 1

First, open the affinity-headerfooter-source.png file in Adobe Fireworks. On the right side, you will notice a taskbar named Layers. Inside this column, a list of elements within the source will appear, divided into folders. The first is Web Layers which controls the green slices on the page that are used to export the images. Click the eye which is immediately left to the folder name Web Layers to make it invisible. This allows you to edit the logo.

Logo

Step 2

Next, double click on the logo. This will activate the text tool so you can edit the element. Highlight the entire text box with your cursor and type your text instead (such as your company name.)

Logo

Logo

If the slogan graphic overlaps your logo as in the examples screenshotted, you will need to move it. Highlight all the paths and text and move it to your desired location. To change the text, simply double click and edit the text.

Logo

Logo

Logo

You will notice the icon left of the logo name, you can keep it but in this guide we shall remove it.

Logo

Logo

Step 3

Next, reactivate the Web Layers slice. As you did in the initial step, select the eye icon to make it visible and subsequently making the slices visible on the canvas. Select the logo slice, either on the canvas itself or in the Web Layers folder. If you find the slice is too small, hover your cursor over the blue points around the slice and drag it to a new size.

Logo

Logo

Step 4

To export your logo, right click on the green slice that is situated above your new logo. A popup menu should appear with numerous options. The value we want to deal with is "Export Selected Slice...". As the name suggests, this option will export/save this slice only out of the entire source window.

Logo

Step 5

If you are new to Fireworks, you may be wondering why it appears that there is only one style variation in the source. This is not the case as we take advantage of the Frame features of Fireworks. You need to simply switch frames to see all the other style variation sources.

There are a few ways to change frames and we will show 2 methods that you can use.

In the right column where you find the Layers toolbar including the Web Layers area, you should see another tab/toolbar named Frames. Just left click on the title Frames to enter the frames area. Then you can click on either of the frames which are named to show which style variant is on that particular frame.

Logo

The second method is the most easiest and simplistic. At the bottom of the Fireworks canvas is a row of buttons, arrows just as previous and next. Select the arrows to switch between frames.

Logo By default, the source should set the export file format to PNG32. If this is not the case, you will need to change your Fireworks export settings. Firstly, expand the Optimise & Align taskbar in the upper right of Fireworks. From the available dropdowns, select PNG32.

Step 6

Once you have successfully edited then exported your new logo, you will need to upload it to your server. This process is best done via a FTP client such as Filezilla
  1. Open your FTP client on your local computer.
  2. Login to your web server where Affinity is installed.
  3. Navigate to the /templates/rt_affinity_j15/images/*style* directory.
  4. Upload logo.png (and any other logo related images) to this directory (You may need to browse on the local panel in the FTP client to find where you have exported your logo).
  5. Clear your browser cache before viewing such as using the keyboard commands on Windows, Ctrl+F5.
Ensure that you are uploading the correct logo to avoid confusion if it does not change. Also take into account hosting permissions. Sometimes, hosts which are not designed for Joomla may have permissions not suited for the setup, thus, the upload will not be complete. In this case, contact your hosting provider.
